What to Pack for Your Anna Maria Island Vacation (Spring Edition)

|

Good News: You Need Less Than You Think

One of the best-kept secrets about staying at Anna Maria Island Getaway is how little you actually need to bring. Beach chairs? Included. Umbrellas? Included. Bikes? Included. Beach towels? Check. Kayak gear? On site.

The biggest packing mistake most visitors make is overpacking. They load up the car with gear they won’t need, forget the things they will, and spend half the drive wondering if they left something important behind.

This guide is designed to help you pack smart for a spring trip to Anna Maria Island — what to bring, what to skip, and a few insider tips that will make your vacation run more smoothly from the moment you arrive.

What We Provide (So You Don’t Have To Pack It)

Before we get to the packing list, here’s what every AMI Getaway unit already has waiting for you:

  • Beach chairs — enough for your whole group
  • Beach umbrella — full-size shade coverage
  • Bicycles — explore the island at your own pace
  • Full kitchen — cook in, eat well, save money
  • Smart TVs — for rainy afternoons or late-night movie nights
  • Free WiFi — stay connected (or don’t)
  • Basic linens and towels — provided for indoor use

Between what we provide and what the island offers (a free trolley, walkable beaches, no-car-needed lifestyle), you really can pack lighter than you think.

The Spring AMI Packing List

Clothing

Spring on Anna Maria Island means daytime highs in the mid-to-upper 70s, and evenings that drop to the comfortable low 70s or upper 60s. You’ll want a mix of warm-weather gear and a light layer for nights.

  • Swimsuits (2–3) — You’ll be in them a lot. Two is the minimum; three lets you always have a dry one.
  • Cover-ups or board shorts — For walking from the beach to grab food or ice cream on Pine Avenue
  • Light shorts and t-shirts — Casual daytime wear on the island
  • One or two light long-sleeve shirts or a hoodie — March evenings can be breezy; a light layer is enough
  • Sundress or casual evening outfit — For dinner at the Sandbar or Beach Bistro
  • Comfortable walking shoes — For bike rides and Pine Avenue exploration
  • Flip flops / sandals — Your primary footwear for the week
  • One pair of closed-toe shoes — If you’re planning kayaking, hiking, or evening walks

Skip: Heavy jackets, multiple pairs of jeans, formal wear. You won’t need any of it.

Sun Protection (This Is the Big One)

The Gulf Coast spring sun is stronger than it looks. Clear skies mean direct UV exposure, and the reflection off the sand and water amplifies it. Sunburn can derail a whole day of your vacation — pack accordingly.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (SPF 30+) — Protect yourself and the Gulf ecosystem. Look for mineral-based sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Most major brands now have reef-safe options.
  • Sunscreen lip balm (SPF 15+) — Lips burn too, and it’s easy to forget them
  • Sunglasses (polarized recommended) — Essential on the water and beach
  • Sun hat or baseball cap — Critical for long beach days, especially with kids
  • Rash guard for kids (and adults who burn easily) — Much easier than constant sunscreen reapplication

Beach Day Essentials

  • Beach bag or tote — A large, sand-tolerant bag for daily beach trips
  • Beach towels — We provide towels inside, but bring or pack dedicated beach towels for the sand (or grab inexpensive ones on arrival)
  • Waterproof phone case — Especially if you’ll be kayaking, paddleboarding, or in the surf
  • Small cooler or insulated bag — For water bottles and snacks at the beach
  • Reusable water bottles — Stay hydrated; the Gulf coast heat sneaks up on you
  • Snorkel gear (optional) — AMI’s waters are clear enough to spot marine life near the shore in spring
  • Sand-resistant mat (optional) — A nicer alternative to beach blankets if you prefer to lounge

For Kids

  • Sand toys and buckets (don’t overdo it — a few pieces are enough)
  • Life vests if your kids aren’t strong swimmers (rentals are also available locally)
  • Kids’ reef-safe sunscreen (and apply it twice as often as you think you need to)
  • Change of clothes for each beach day — saltwater and sand get into everything
  • A few books, card games, or quiet activities for downtime

Medications and First Aid

  • Any prescription medications (don’t forget — this is the one non-negotiable)
  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen
  • Antacids (vacation eating habits can surprise your stomach)
  • Aloe vera gel (for inevitable mild sunburns)
  • Band-aids and basic first aid basics
  • Motion sickness medication if you plan to take a boat tour or fishing charter
  • Insect repellent — mosquitos are minimal near the Gulf beach, but can appear at dusk around the bay side

Electronics and Practical Items

  • Phone charger (obvious, but always on the forgotten list)
  • Portable charger / power bank — useful for all-day beach days
  • Camera or GoPro if you want better-than-phone photos
  • Bluetooth speaker — for beach music (mindful of neighbors, please)
  • Dry bags if you’re planning water activities

Insider Tips from the Island

Use the Free Trolley

The free Anna Maria Island trolley runs the length of the island from Longboat Key to the City Pier in Anna Maria. It’s air-conditioned, friendly, and completely free. Leave your car parked and use the trolley for island exploration — it stops at beaches, restaurants, and Pine Avenue. Running daily during season, it’s one of the island’s best-kept secrets.

Grocery Shop on Your Way In

There’s a Publix just before you reach the island on Manatee Avenue. Stop there on your way in and stock up on groceries, sunscreen, and any essentials. Prices are slightly higher on the island itself, and having a stocked kitchen from day one makes a big difference (especially for breakfast and lunch — save your dining budget for the great dinners on the island).

Don’t Pack Beach Chairs or Umbrellas

Seriously — we’ve got them. It’s one of the most common things guests pack that they don’t need. Same with bikes. Leave that space in your car for your actual luggage.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen Only, Please

Anna Maria Island’s Gulf waters are a protected ecosystem, home to sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, and diverse marine life. Regular sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate can harm coral reefs and marine life. Make the switch to reef-safe mineral sunscreen — it works just as well and it’s the right thing to do for the waters we all love.
